Akura Medical, a Shifamed portfolio company, is seeking an accomplished Principal Software Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and integration of next-generation medical imaging systems. In this senior technical leadership role, you will define technical strategy, drive system-level innovation, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver imaging solutions that meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. This role emphasizes deep technical expertise and strategic problem-solving, enabling breakthrough advances in patient care without relying on traditional management layers. This is a full-time, on-site position at our Los Gatos, CA offices.
Responsibilities, Skills & Hands-On Experience
  • Serve as the technical authority for the design, architecture, and integration of advanced medical imaging platforms.
  • Define and execute long-term technology roadmaps that align with company objectives and clinical needs.
  • Drive system-level innovation across imaging algorithms, visualization tools, AI/ML integration, and cloud-based solutions.
  • Lead high-level trade-off analyses and risk assessments to inform strategic design decisions.
  • Collaborate with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and manufacturing leaders to ensure solutions are scalable, manufacturable, and compliant with FDA, ISO 13485, and other standards.
  • Establish best practices for system verification, validation, and cybersecurity within imaging platforms.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers across the organization, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
  • Build and manage partnerships with academic collaborators, vendors, and external technology partners.
  • Represent Shifamed as a thought leader through patents, publications, and conference presentations.
Education & Work Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (advanced degree strongly preferred).
  • 12+ years of experience in medical imaging system design, with a track record of leading complex programs from concept to regulatory clearance.
  • Deep expertise in imaging modalities (e.g., X-ray, MRI, ultrasound) and advanced image processing algorithms.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and system development tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C++, VTK, Qt/QML).
  • Proven experience architecting on-prem as well as cloud-based imaging solutions and integrating AI/ML methods for computer vision and diagnostic applications.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory and quality frameworks (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 60601), including cybersecurity best practices.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation, evidenced by patents, publications, or recognized industry contributions.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to align multidisciplinary teams around a shared technical vision.
  • Success thriving in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Our salary ranges are calculated by role, level, and location. Please note that your position within that range will be determined by your job-related knowledge, location, skills, experience, relevant education, and training/certifications. The base salary range for this full-time position is between $190,000 to $220,000 + equity + benefits.
