At Umami Bioworks, we are pioneering cultivated, 'not caught' seafood by developing the production system for delicious, nutritious, and affordable cultivated fish, starting with IUCN Red Listed species that are difficult to farm and being driven extinct by human consumption. We are partnering with food producers to scale our cultivated seafood production system to provide people around the world with a stable, resilient, local supply of seafood free from mercury, antibiotics, microplastics, and ocean pollutants.

We’re on a mission to empower humanity to eat sustainably without sacrifice. We believe the only way to change how the majority of the world eats meat and seafood is to create real seafood - the most delicious, healthiest seafood available - without the environmental and animal welfare consequences of our current practices.

We’re a venture-backed biotech startup located in Singapore where some of the world’s smartest, most passionate people are pioneering a sustainable food future that is attractive and accessible to people around the world. We are united by our collective drive to ask tough questions, take on challenging problems, and apply cutting-edge science and engineering to create a better future for humanity. At Umami Bioworks, you will be encouraged to dream big and will have the freedom to create, invent, and do the best, most impactful work of your career.

Umami Bioworks is looking to hire an inquisitive, innovative, and independent MSAT - Process Analytical Technology Scientist to join our R&D team in India.

The individual should be goal-oriented, forward-thinking and self-motivated with a strong ability to work collaboratively with production and R&D teams. This role will involve:

  • Aiding in setup and monitoring of bioprocess from 10L to 1000L bioreactors, especially operating associated sensors and analytical instruments.
  • Acting as internal subject matter expert on all PAT instruments and associated data management pipelines.
  • Leveraging process analytical data to identify opportunities for process optimization and improved control.
  • Evaluation and selection of PAT equipment for streamlined process development and production.
  • Collaboration with R&D, production and engineering teams to support day-to-day operations, product development, and regulatory needs.
  • Lead investigations by analysing the data to identify anomalies, investigate their causes, and propose solutions.
  • Understand the integration of PAT equipment requirements with electronic batch records to ensure all compliance and data monitoring needs are captured in manufacturing electronic documentation.
  • Support other core PAT activities (e.g. preventative maintenance planning, system upgrades, periodic review, change management, deviation management, external agency/internal inspections).

PhD. in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or related field + 5 years or M.S + 7 years of relevant industrial hands-on experience

Experience:

  • 3-5 years experience with animal cell culture in production reactors of at least 1 kL
  • Experience with scaling animal cell processes from bench to production (10 to 1kL+ range), especially in PAT-led approaches for rapid, efficient scale-up
  • Proven experience independently designing and troubleshooting fermentation experiments using PAT approaches and instruments.

Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with PAT instruments and integration of sensors with bioreactor operations and control software is essential.
  • In-depth knowledge of operation and optimization of in-line optical sensors, especially IR, for online monitoring and process control.
  • Capable of working within a diverse team of internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong spoken and written English language skills.
